Position Description :
The Inpatient Coding Specialist (Level III) will perform all coding and abstracting for HUP, PPMC and PAH, by reviewing medical records and selecting the principal diagnosis, secondary diagnoses, principal procedure, and secondary procedures accurately. This individual will also perform analysis of the DRG assigned to produce the highest level of reimbursement to which the facility is legally entitled according to stringent coding and compliance guidelines. They will review and act as the gatekeeper for the provider query process, by being the single point of contact with the provider community. Assign high dollar and death charts to the coding staff in a fair and equitable manner as well as perform inpatient SMART reviews adhering to national and facility specific coding guidelines. Assists Coding Managers with other duties, as assigned.
Minimum Requirements :
• High school diploma or GED required.
• BA or BS in Health Information Management or related field preferred.
• Minimum of two-three years previous work experience coding at an inpatient academic medical center.
• Certified Coding Specialist-CCS (AHIMA) required
• RHIA or RHIT preferred.
• Extensive knowledge of medical terminology, human anatomy & physiology, and clinical disease processes required.
• Extensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS classification systems.
• Ability to assess, prioritize and complete multiple tasks in a stressful environment.
• Familiarity with computerized encoders preferred.
