The Office of the Provost provides direction on all facets of the University’s academic mission, including education, faculty, research, online learning, global initiatives, admissions, athletics, student life, and arts and culture. The Provost’s Center aggregates programs and offices designed to support University operations, including: the Office of the Provost, the Office of the Vice Provost for Research and its reporting departments (Penn Center for Innovation, Environmental Health and Radiation Safety, University Laboratory Animal Resources, and Regulatory Affairs), the Office of the Chaplain, the Graduate Student Center and Family Resource Center, the Division of Recreation and Intercollegiate Athletics, College Houses and Academic Services, New Student Orientation, the Office of Student Conduct, the Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the University of Pennsylvania Press, and all of the University’s arts organizations (Penn Museum, Institute of Contemporary Art, Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, Arthur Ross Gallery, and University Art Collection). It also includes interdisciplinary academic centers and institutes that are more appropriately housed centrally than in an individual school, including the Laboratory for Research on the Structure of Matter, the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience, the Center for Neuroscience and Society, the Penn Institute for Urban Research, the Center for Teaching and Learning, Kelly Writers House, and Weiss Tech House.


Provide supervision to the vet tech staff including but not limited to scheduling of work duties; supervision of work production, and providing the veterinary technician staff with daily direction. Evaluate the performance of vet tech staff and provide assessments of personnel work performance to the manager. Schedule and organize the use of all ULAR managed operating suites. Schedule surgical facility maintenance and inventories of stock and pharmaceuticals. Schedule colony maintenance such as vaccination, TB testing of primates, receiving and quarantine work on newly received animals. Provide information on a weekly schedule with regards to animal deliveries and those procedures that do not utilize vet tech services. Update schedule with veterinarian coverage information. Provides back-up to the manager and may act as the functional manager in the absence of the manager. Review and submit weekly payroll entries. Assist with facilitating equipment repair/service. Familiarity with IACUC protocols and assure investigator adherence to approved protocols. Provide anesthesia to high risk and critical cases on an independent basis. Evaluation of anesthetic depth, medication administration and extensive use of physiologic monitors and interpretation of their parameters. Utilize in-depth knowledge of pharmacology and drug calculations. Maintain anesthesia records. Ability to independently function quickly and react to stressful situations involving patient care. Provide care to critical animals in Intensive Care Unit. Triage and assess animal health, provide immediate care to emergency cases. Administer medications by oral, topical and injectable routes. Consult with clinical veterinary staff and laboratory personnel on anesthesia and treatment options. Collect specimens such as blood and feces. Prepare bills for treatments and medications used to provide clinical care. Prepare bills for vet tech assistance and surgical services. Prepare daily treatment roster of on-going cases using the computer.


2-4 years of supervisory experience preferred, in a veterinary setting. Graduation from an accredited animal health technology program or equivalent, with 3-5 years experience working with animals in a research setting with primary responsibilities in animal anesthesia techniques, or equivalent combination of education or experience. AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist level or a demonstrated commitment to attaining that certification within the time frame established by AALAS. Ability to independently manage anesthesia in a variety of species. Demonstrate the ability to work effectively and productively in a team-oriented environment while maintaining a strong sense of integrity and confidentiality. Creative problem solving skills and the ability to exercise sound and accurate judgment in making timely decisions. Proficiently manage multiple projects simultaneously. Superior planning, organizational, computer, written and verbal communication skills. The successful candidate will have the ability to respond to changing circumstances by being innovative and altering behavior to better fit different situations. Ability to lift 50 pounds. Work hours, Monday-Friday, 7:30-4:30. Some weekends, holidays, and overtime may be required. Computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word. Previous supervisory/managerial experience preferred.
